So, gardening is here and I need to know what you have on tap????

I am going big this year!

I am busier than I have ever been, but, I have a secret weapon. A one armed fella that lives on our farm, has a lot of time, is hippy'ish, wants to learn how to farm and is a great friend/ family/ bro.. Oh, he can kill a skateboard.

Put in enough potatoes to feed the county today, onions and peppers of all sorts.. Finally dried up enough to till. This weekend, greens, carrots, brussels, and a metric ton of herbs.

Real excited this year. Have a couple of folks interested in learning how to garden and raise chinkins. The day of the farmer/gardener is back!!!!

My stuff is almost done for the year. Too hot. I've got Rosso Sicilian and Mortgage Lifter tomatoes. Cukes. 5 different peppers. Of course I've got Oranges, Grapefruit and Keylimes and my wife always has a dozen Pineapples squirreled away in different stages of growth. I missed planting watermelon, I regret that.

Man, central FL is a bitch of a place to grow stuff other than houses. Houses just pop up in any vacant field.

I built some raised beds out of reclaimed fencing and we planted tomatoes, cukes, squash, greens and who knows what else my wife chose. I was in charge of the carpentry, dirt and irrigation. She did the planting.

This is where I'm at; these are still growing nicely in the heat but buds are no longer making it. Not a huge crop but I should have enough to make a fair amount of sauce. I've probably got 100 tomatoes on vines. I do heirlooms rather than just what HD sells. The Appalachian varieties do ok for me and are hardier. I'll get a fall crop too. Planning that now.

Raced bikes this morning, worked in the garden all afternoon... Americans dreaming cuz!

Got all the herbs in 4 kinds of basil, dill, sage, oregano and what not. Put out my spaghetti squash, butternuts, cabbage, more tomatoes, crooknecks, and few other odds and ends.

Now i am getting ready to fire up the grill for some wild turkey burgers, come on this shit is getting REAL!!!!!

Oh yea, tomatillos???? Anybody? Little gal loves them. But, I have never grown them.

Stopped by the Amish greenhouse last week for 96 various tomato and pepper plants for $25. Too cool to plant, so we have been sunning them as necessary, and watching them grow inside.

Herb garden is on the list, and watermelons too.

It was 31 yesterday am so.....waiting for consistent warmth.

I think this will be the last week I'll have any production other than peppers. It's getting too hot.

Should be a good summer and fall.

Sort of the perfect summer. We are not planning to be away anywhere for more than a couple of days so I can tend the garden. I cleaned up an area of the yard that gets tremendous sun, good air movement, etc so I built a number of raised beds in that area - 4x8 feet each, 2 feet deep.

Moved about 10 inches of gravel for each one to give a drainage base,then filled them with a planting soil and ran irrigation lines. Moving all those yards of gravel and soil (uphill) played hell with my spring cycling mileage.

My wife and I then looked at a number of other spots in the yard and decided instead of just planting flowers again, we would plant something useful. The kids are excited about it too.

Looking forward to a good summer and a good crop.

I am a firm believer in planting and gardening, and I only have one rule.. If I plant and take care of it, I better get something to eat off of it. My wife used to want me to plant flowers, now she lets me just plant food. However, I will plant some flowers that are beneficial to the garden. I.e. Marigolds, citronella, etc.

As an aside, already getting a ton of asparagus, rhubarb, and strawberries! Getting a big old strawberry/rhubarb pie tomorrow!!!

My tomatoes are done. It's too hot. I regret not planting watermellon. The kids should have the experience of spitting seeds after an afternoon in the pool. The new store bought seedless things aren't as good.

Tomatillos are the best! We plant about 8 a year, and from that can make enough salsa verde to last the year(10-12) quarts. Plus we can put another 3 gallons of tomatillos in the freezer for fun in the winter. Their husks allow them to grow well into October, with some basic coverings, here near the canadian border.

Tomatoes, turnips, lettuce, collards, peppers, yellow crookneck squash, basil, onions, pole beans. I planted some sunflowers for fun, too. The lettuce has bolted and is over two feet tall, and the turnips look like they are growing out of the ground. Here in Alabama, people mostly eat the greens but I love the roots.

The collards were leftover from last year's fall garden and we have eaten them already. There's a couple of strawberry plants out there from last year; I hope we get some fruit next spring.

Our garden is in the front yard, close to the sidewalk. The neighbors enjoy looking at the garden as much as we do.
