56% silver brazing rod issues atmo -

i recently got about 40 ounces of H+H Braze 560 and had not restocked in about 14 months.
the current batch sucks. it comes off the end of the rod and just sits there. no capillary action
at all. i'll send it all back to lucas milhaupt this week. any H+H users out there notice a change
in the wetting out and flow characteristics of this stuff. ps what 56% do you use atmo?

+1. great price, wets out great, their flux works awesome. also reccomended from them: the nickle-brass & the 45%. i like the 45% better then fillet pro for stainless dropouts. www.brazing.com

I use Harris 56% and like it very much. I did however get a roll about 6 months ago that was crap. I thought it must be me or the flux but as soon and I grabs an old nub of leftover rod it worked perfectly. When switching back to the new roll it all went to shit. It wouldn't wet out properly and burned easily.

I returned it for exchange to the local place that keeps it on the shelf for me and the replacement worked perfectly.

Go figure,

yep! take notice.....the gasflux brass C-04 rod took a real dive lately. smoking, bubbling, porosities........i figure i scrapheap a frame a year. QC in effect, yo.

I just received some C-04 from GF and havehad good luck so far (several pounds and counting). Seems to be the same consistancy as some 6 year old stock I was using. Not the first I've heard of this though. Just a blip for a few months, or did I luck out in the good batch?

i bought from 2 different batches - i had some old stuff that was awesome & then i got some newer rods & mixed them in :frown: the bin & i can tell when i get a rotten one........it's like when you burn yourself & keep brazing and the skin/flesh sticking to the rod cooks in the puddle - it's just like that.

Harris has been pretty reliable for me though I did have one roll that was a bit off a couple of years ago,good since then.

Pretty sure there's only a couple of mills in the US making 56% silver but it's marketed under by many other companies. Sorry to hear that you got some bad stuff. Send it back and cross your fingers. I don't think there's a brand name immune to this sort of thing.

Call me old fashioned but I use Gasflux C-04 with Welco #17 flux for everything, lugs or fillets ,except SS bits. It works great and the flux soaks completely off in cold water.
