    Default Paddling Notes

In the past, I've put paddling photos and reports in with the weekly ride reports, but perhaps they could use their own place. This can be a thread for anyone with write-ups, pictures, or questions who wants to use it.

I got up to the BWCA this week for the second run of the summer. We went out of Kawishiwi Lake, and did an out-and-back to Alice, mostly through the Kawishiwi River followage.

Here are a few shots from the trip:

    Nice.
    I'll post some soon.
Bought an inflatable canoe recently and test runs on tiny Lake Anne last weekend were successful.
    Circumnavigating Roosevelt Island tomorrow.

Envy. For three years prior to college I traveled from Eli into Quatico with a gal pal who was a pro. guide. Her goal was to get as far into Canada as possible where very few people are able to go without a plane. Basically I was the muscle ;) Incredible country, mystical and at the time quite pristine.

    YES post those paddles.

I look at that breakfast and recall Hemingway's Nick Adams Stories.

I have some gear from Nemo I am very pleased with.

Their bug tent exemplifies that old line about luxury being necessity after the first time. I usually sleep out in it when it's not raining. It cools down at night quickly, and it doesn't heat up like a tent in the morning. That, and you get great views as soon as you open your eyes.

What of theirs have you liked?

The dehydrated ones that come in a carton are gold for these trips.

Nemo: Dragonfly 2P, two bags, hammock, solar shower, Fillo.

My permit just arrived to hike Evolution Valley from South Lake starting August 11 and ending the 23rd. 25th to 28th Kearsarge Pass. 29th to September 10 Italy Pass.

After that I don't know. Likely I will head back home, because I expect the state to lock down again.

    2 miles around Roosevelt Island.
Forgot the removable fin, which made for an extra degree of difficulty.

I talked with a woman I met on my ride across the US in March. She went to her parents' house in MN around the time I came home to MA and she's on the road now returning to Santa Cruz. Her view was if she did not have to do this she would not. The road is not a good place to be now, at all. Some people behave, some are truculent and entitled. People are vandalizing the parks, for instance. I am enjoying my life where I live, sleeping in a tent, getting things done.

Best case scenario for my trip is a blissful experience sandwiched between 42 hour drives through a raging pandemic. Anything but best case is really ugly.

The White Mountains are closer, and I have everything I need to go.

Just got into Canada and, even though I tested negative for Covid the day before, the quarantine law says I must stay on my house and property for 14 days with no contact to other people. And they check up on you.

This also means that you can't ride, even alone, out on the roads. So my riding will consist of the Seven on the trainer for the time.

Bizarrely, you are allowed out on the water alone.

So, while not as beautiful as the scenes in the photos in the posts above, the next two weeks will be pick one...

Sure looks like there are worse places to be stuck, Jon!

For me, the paddling thread meets the postman thread.

    For next week:

That isn’t a paddle that is a work of art.

Anywhere in particular? I've never been up there, and I was under the impression that it was a little too far west for most of the good river paddling. I would like to go up there and hunt sharptail grouse sometime.

Clearwater Lake , Cormorant or many others. Yeah, not going to paddle, but to fish. As a boy, my uncles always did late spring fishing trips driving from Mpls to The Pas.

We stayed in an old trapper's cabin. Fished all day, played cribbage all night.

I had a month in the High Sierra planned: Evolution Valley, Kearsarge Pass, Italy Pass. But I tested negative for antibodies, and included with the permits are guidelines to backcountry etiquette: you are on your own; don't expect to be saved if you do something dumb; don't put someone else's life at risk.

I look at these photos and know what I am missing.

    Next year.

That sure sucks. Your luck is not running real great lately. Hope it improves presently...

Many many years ago I went to summer camp near Tremblant. Wonderful area. We did some canoeing, portaged to another small lake and practiced eskimo rolls.

I think if I went up there now and jumped into a lake I'd freeze.............
