    Default Auto tranportation

    All,
Has anyone had experience with a service that transports cars cross country (US)?
My in-laws are moving from New Mexico to New England and we need to figure out how to get their cars moved.
The cars are just normal cars...as opposed to cars seen on the Automobile or Porsche threads.
Google searching reveals a lot of options, but it is hard to tell how legit any of them are.

    Thanks in advance.

Most are brokers who arrange for transportation based on who is available. If you call one of the 800 numbers, be prepared to get calls for weeks, even after your vehicle has been delivered. I done the broker route twice, but if you're willing to spend a little more, Horseless Carriage is a good company that moves your vehicle inside a trailer out of the weather. If you go broker, be prepared to meet the driver somewhere such as a truck stop because he'll be in a big rig full of cars. The vast majority are professionals who do a good job. My most recent was in late 2020 and it cost $1300 to ship a Ford Escape from Kingman, AZ, to Annapolis, MD. It's probably more now because of fuel prices.

Edit. Have two sets of keys. One set will go with the driver. Mail the second set to the recipient.

During college I would sign up with a company called Drive Away. I signed a contract that I'd drive a car to Washington DC, wash it and filled with gas. No cost to me other than gas.

If that still exists, not a bad option.

First, you have to decide if you want the transporter to be open or enclosed. (That's assuming you aren't going to go the "pay some guy's cousins to drive the cars for you" route.)

You'll find some information and reviews here:

Before posting the question I did try a company's online quote systems. I knew that I was asking for spam because they all require your email and phone number...and having built enough of these online systems I know the game. And like Bill said, I have been getting emails and phone calls. And I also am aware enough of how the shipping/transportation industry works to know what happens behind the scenes for these quoting companies. But there are so many of them it is hard to tell which ones are legit.
I appreciate the suggestions to help get started.

Was gonna recommend the same. The amount of cars these guys sell I’d assume they have some legit vendors.

I used Montway, a broker, last time I shipped a car. They didn't sell my email and phone number, everything was handled on the website directly. Rig was a dually with a two-car enclosed trailer. Loaded my 911 up with another Porsche they'd picked up earlier, $800 door to door Boston to Pittsburgh, overnight.
