Tubeless sealant for inflatable stand-up paddle board?

I’m borrowing a friend’s inflatable SUP. It has a tiny leak at the bottom edge of one of the longitudinal overlap seams.

Directions say to deflate the board and apply PVC cement.

My instinct is to throw in a slug of Stan’s and rest it with that seam side down for a bit. What does the Veesalon Hive Mind think about this off-label use of tire sealant?

PS Friend is not handy and will simply be grateful if leak is stopped.

I'd lean towards what the manufacturer recommends.

Not sure I like what Stan's does to the inside of a tire over time, probably wouldn't want it inside that thing.

I tried stan's on the inflatable unicorn of my kids. Also at a seam area. Didn't help. I'd also lean towards manufacturer recommendations.

I agree with the others re following mfr recs and write only to add that it's one thing for a Stan patch to fail on a tubeless tire during a ride and another for it to fail on an SUP while out for a paddle in the middle of a large body of water.

I agree with the others re following mfr recs and write only to add that it's one thing for a Stan patch to fail on a tubeless tire during a ride and another for it to fail on an SUP while out for a paddle in the middle of a large body of water.

This is a ROC unit, which has two layers of heavy-gauge PVC with a third around the rails. The leak is tiny, inaudible, only noticeable as a stream of microbubbles at the bottom edge of the rail strip. There is no worry about losing a plug or a patch, even in the middle of the lake.

What I am worried about is what might happen to the goo when the board is deflated and rolled up. The inner layer of these things is a fabric sock that handles the pressure (PVC is airtight and abrasion-resistant), and because that has stitches or strings that tie the bottom to the top to keep it flat (as a board) when inflated, instead of turning into a sausage. It could be a disaster if the sealant stuck those strings together, but with 15-20 psi pulling them apart, maybe not a worry.

And nobody wants a sealant booger anywhere, especially in that forest of floss. But hey I was not going to put very much in.



What the hell is "Military Grade" PVC?
