Depends. Aistreams are clear coated so there is nothing to it. I treat it like a new car. I'm not sure what the old Airstreams were coated with, perhaps they were just waxed? I'm aware that some folks will polish their airstreams to bare metal and wax it...yikes.

Upkeep is not awful, you need to keep the seams clean(ish) by washing once or twice a year than apply some wax. Also, many of the seams have sealant. That will need a visual check once a year and possibly pick and replace if it looks brittle. It's kinda relaxing if you are into mundane duties.

FWIIW We tried like he!! to buy used. At least five times I was running with money in hand only to lose out. They go fast. That one is a deal.
In my limited experience buying used is better than new because folks can't help themselves with upgrades and easy fixes. Also, a used well cared for trailer will have the bugs worked out. Trust me Airstreams have all sorts of issues just like any house on wheels that smashes down the highway ;)

Airstreams at one time were clear coated at the factory after all the body panels were riveted together. Then the EPA got involved and whatever they were using was no longer available. Newer Airstreams are assembled from coated sheets of aluminum. It's important to keep after the exterior skin. Every place there is a rivet, and there are lots of them, is a potential for filaform corrosion. Many people go as far as treating each and every rivet with a Q-tip and a special liquid to inhibit corrosion before waxing the trailer.

We treat ours like a new car and give it an annual waxing. That takes a few hours more than your typical sedan.

The real shiny ones you see have had there clear coat stripped and the aluminum polished. This also takes regular maintenance. I've heard quotes in the neighborhood of $10,000 to strip and polish a trailer.
